Today we want show you what being part of AIESEC Milano really means by sharing with you some of our most valuable stories, for example Estela’s one.
I am Estela, I’m 24 years old, and I study Corporate Communication. I joined AIESEC one year and a half ago because I wanted to change something in myself and in my society, from that day I keep changing and the world does it with me.
Before becoming part of this community I prefer to do things by myself, but now I know the value of a working in team and how to cooperate.
At the beginning I wasn’t a very authoritarian kind of leader but lately I learnt how to mix sweetness and strictness, I was not used to show my weakness but now I know that there’s nothing wrong if sometimes I make a mistake or I show that I have a problem. Nobody is perfect and I know that if I show my deepest weaknesses, no one will judge me.
What is a leader?
During these years I covered different positions. I started like a team member in the outgoing area, then I decided to challenge myself a bit more and I became a team leader, and today I’m Promo Brand Coordinator for the outgoing volunteering projects.
The breakdown of my experience arrived with the decision to became a team leader because from that point, in addition to my personal problems and life, responsibilities and team management come out! It was not so easy at the beginning but after a lot of efforts I became more aware of my weakness as well as my strength and at the same time I learnt how to manage a team, how to become a point of reference for other people, how to behave with every different kind of person and how to react to different and difficult situations.
When somebody asks me what being a leader means to me, I always say that a leader should be a respected and appreciated point of reference for other people, should be able to face challenges and take the responsibility in every situation and sometimes should pretend that everything is under control, eaven if it is not completely true.
The quote describing my experience so far is :
“Get every challenge, face it and don’t be scared”
It’s mainly thanks to my team, to the people around me and to the skills that I gained so far, that I decided to stayed in AIESEC and to continue my route in the association.
“Make in Italy”
This is our motto, because while thinking of our country we should know that is not the worst country ever, we do have a lot of problems but we’re better than what we think and say.
This means being the change that we want to see, starting doing something instead of keep complaining. For this reason I’m still in AIESEC and I think that in our small way we can change something and have a positive impact on our society.
